Morning Bid: Rates buzz sustained before Fed loan data

A street sign for Wall Street is seen in the financial district in New York, U.S., November 8, 2021. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields have fallen about 50bps from October's peaks and the drop last week was the biggest recoil since March. For now, S&P500 futures are pointing to further slight gains on Monday - which if realized on the cash market later would make for the sixth straight gain and the longest daily run since June. Undermined by the retreat in Treasury yields, the dollar (.DXY) slipped back to the lowest since Sept 20. The backdrop of an easier dollar and Treasury yields provides significant relief for emerging markets, with MSCI's emerging market stock index (.MSCIEF) hitting its highest since Sept 20 too.

The first two satellites for Amazon's Project Kuiper internet service were launched on Friday. A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket emblazoned with the Amazon logo lifted off from Cape Canaveral shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern time (1800 GMT), carrying the two Kuiper test satellites, a long-awaited mission Amazon initially had intended to launch using different rockets. In the days leading up to the launch, Amazon divulged few specifics about the two satellites, which were built at its satellite plant in Redmond, Washington. Amazon has vowed to invest $10 billion into its Kuiper project, which was announced in 2019, the year SpaceX began deploying its first operational Starlink spacecraft. The market for broadband internet service from low-Earth orbiting satellites is viewed as being worth up to tens of billions of dollars in the next decade. Like SpaceX, Amazon aims to target individual consumers and enterprise customers with Kuiper, pulling from its devices playbook to build consumer terminals at a company cost of $400 each - though it has not yet announced prices.

PARIS – Competitors or not, SpaceX continues to be willing to launch for other satellite internet companies. The agreement covers 14 launches of the Canadian venture's Lightspeed internet satellites. SpaceX has used its rockets to launch communications satellites for companies that compete directly or indirectly with its global Starlink internet network. These deals come as an Amazon shareholder alleges the company snubbed SpaceX for launch contracts of the tech giant's Kuiper internet satellites. Earlier this summer Telesat announced a swap in the manufacturer of its Lightspeed satellites, with Canadian space company MDA taking the place of French-Italian manufacturer Thales Alenia Space.

LEO satellites operate 36 times closer to Earth than traditional ones so they take less time to send and receive information, leading to better and faster broadband service even in remote areas. "It is another big step forward on our path to get Lightspeed up there," Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg told Reuters. Telesat picked Elon Musk's SpaceX because it had "the best combination of price, performance, reliability and schedule tempo," Goldberg said. Satellite constellations have sapped large amounts of the U.S. launch supply in recent years with considerably large bulk launch orders like Telesat's SpaceX contract. SpaceX aims to nearly double its annual launch rate in 2023 thanks to its growing Starlink constellation.

Canada's Telesat says MDA to build 198 satellites, shares soar

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationAug 11 (Reuters) - Satellite operator Telesat (TSAT.TO), has given space tech firm MDA (MDA.TO) a C$2.1 billion ($1.56 billion) contract to build 198 satellites for its low-earth orbit program. Telesat said it had earmarked $3.5 billion as capital expenditure for the Lightspeed project and that the MDA deal had helped it save $2 billion. The technology would also allow each satellite to be slightly smaller than the ones Telesat was previously considering. Telesat's Lightspeed network is designed to serve the connectivity requirements of enterprise and government users, with highly secure, resilient, low-latency broadband connectivity anywhere in the world. The company launched its first LEO 3 demonstration satellite aboard Rocket Lab's Electron rocket in July.

Shares of Canadian telecommunications satellite operator Telesat surged on Friday after the company announced it would swap suppliers for its planned Lightspeed global internet network. Canadian space company MDA will now build the Lightspeed satellites, taking the place of French-Italian manufacturer Thales Alenia Space and resulting in "total capital cost savings" of about $2 billion, Telesat announced. The company expects to begin launching the first Lightspeed satellites in mid-2026, with global service beginning once the first 156 satellites are in orbit. Telesat stock surged as much as much as 64% with heavy volume in early trading from its previous close at $8.45 a share, before slipping slightly to closer to 50%. "I'm incredibly proud of the Telesat team for their innovative work to further optimize ... resulting in dramatically reduced costs," Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg said in a release.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Rocket Lab is up 85% so far this year, closing back in on its $10 a share starting point two years ago, while Redwire is close behind, up 78%. Rocket Lab is the index's No. Chanin noted that with many of these space stocks having debuted at $10 a share they're largely still trying to get back to where they started. Rocket Lab has a healthy lead but we'll see who ends up on top come the end of the year – with the market watching closely for continued execution.

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Blue Origin, the private space company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, was awarded its first interplanetary NASA contract on Thursday to launch a mission next year to study the magnetic field around Mars, the U.S. space agency and company said. Blue Origin has flown previous NASA missions with its smaller, suborbital New Shepard rocket, which can carry research payloads on short, microgravity trips to the edge of space and back. Blue Origin, known for its astro-tourism business for wealthy customers and celebrities, is one of 13 firms NASA chose last year for its Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare missions (VADR) program. VADR essentially is intended to spur private development of private space launch vehicles by assigning lower-cost NASA science missions to new rockets with an unproven record and higher chance of failure. Blue Origin also declined to discuss financial details.

Dec 16 (Reuters) - Maxar Technologies Inc (MAXR.N) said on Friday private-equity firm Advent International has agreed to buy the satellite owner and operator for about $4 billion. Under the agreement, Advent will pay $53 a share for Maxar, representing a premium of nearly 129% over the stock's last closing price. Westminster, Colorado-based Maxar, which has a market cap of $1.72 billion, is a satellite imaging company that observes changes on Earth and analyses data. The U.K.'s competition regulator launched an in-depth probe into American satellite internet company Viasat's $7.3 billion deal to buy British rival Inmarsat. Specifically, the CMA is worried the deal would lead to higher prices for onboard Wi-Fi on plane flights. The watchdog has said Viasat and Inmarsat "compete closely in the aviation sector, particularly for the supply of onboard wifi for passenger use." The merger of Viasat and Inmarsat could therefore "lock in a large part of the customer base" before rival suppliers emerge. Combined, Intelsat and rival Panasonic represent more than 75% of the long-haul IFC market, the regulator stated.
SpaceX has landed a $2 million Air Force contract to provide Starlink in Europe and Africa. SpaceX has the most well-established satellite network compared to other firms, the Air Force said. Under the contract, Starlink, which has more than 2,700 satellites in orbit, will support the Air Force's 86th Airlift Wing based at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The Air Force also said it expected Starlink to provide up to 500 megabits per second download speed and low latency connectivity. SpaceX was seeking funding for Starlink to provide internet within rural communities in almost 650,000 locations across 35 states.
